There are many types of exciting and challenging jobs being offered to both secondary and post-secondary students to gain valuable, hands-on work experience. These opportunities encompass a wide range of duties and responsibilities as they relate directly and indirectly to providing service to all Canadians and include office and clerical work, field and lab work, information technology work and working outdoors. Students obtain fair and equal access to job opportunities across the country. No experience necessary. See website for eligbility criteria.

Young Canada Works!

Young-Canada-WorksThis program offers students and recent graduates, ages 16 to 30, the opportunity to get paid summer jobs and internships to develop your skills and experience. The government offers approximately 2,780 wage subsidies as an incentive for employers to hire you. Visit the website for more information and for a detailed description of the eligibility criteria. Once you register, you can view the job postings and submit your application.

 YMCA Employment Programs for Youth

The YMCA offers the following government-funded employment programs for youth.

YouthBEAT:  a holistic program geared to eligible youth, ages 15 to 29, with mental health challenges that offers support, training, mentorship as well as a 3-month work placement with a wage subsidy to the employer.

Youth Skills At Work:  offers eligible youth, ages 15 to 30, paid, pre-employment training and work experience with local businesses as well as a variety of workshops related to job search and employability skills.

Youth Works:  offers a 30-week job readiness program for eligible youth, ages 15 to 29, gain the confidence, skills and experience to secure and maintain full-time employment.  Provides short-term skills training or industry specific certifications in high demand sectors such as hospitality, retail/customer service, administration, janitorial and food service.  Must be a resident of the Fraser Valley area (workshops are held in Chilliwack)

 

Explore

Five-Week French-Language Bursary Program — most expenses are covered! Are you Explore.jpglooking for a spring or summer program to learn French? Do you want to discover another region of Canada and meet new people? Go Explore!

Explore is a five-week intensive language-immersion course. You can take the course in the spring or summer, whichever you prefer. Participants in Explore receive a $2,000 bursary (taxable income) that covers tuition fees for the courses, instructional materials, meals and accommodations, workshops, and other mandatory activities. Must be at least 16 years of age to apply (no maximum age). Application deadline is usually at the end of February each year.

International Experience Canada

Or maybe you want to gain valuable international work experience in a foreign country… intern abroad for your next co-op placement… or simply travel the globe working at stops along the way. International Experience Canada facilitates arrangements with different countries around the world to make it easier for you to travel and work in another country for up to one year. Restricted to youth ages 18 to 35.

Forum for Young Canadians

Canada’s premier civics education program for students aged 15 – 19 years old. Forum Forum-Young-Canadians.jpgbrings students to Ottawa for a week of intensive academic adventure immersing them in the exciting world of national politics and public affairs. Participants spend one week in Ottawa with 100 other young leaders from coast to coast. Their classroom is Parliament Hill and their teachers are Ministers, Members of Parliament, Senators, senior Public Servants, members of the national media and business leaders! Cost is $895 for the week, including accommodation and meals. The Governments pays your airfare! Partial bursaries are available. Some students engage in fundraising activities in their community to help cover the costs of attending.
